VE Day 1945

Our main exhibition in the Museum for 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the ending of the Second World War in Europe, and gives a taste of what life was like in the Ventnor area during that time.  VE Day on 8 May 1945 marked the end of the war in Europe, and was celebrated around Britain. The exhibition The 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two was created by Michael Freeman, and the video version here was produced by MrAlexTech.

Ventnor Bay in the 1890s

The spectacular sight of Ventnor's ascending terraces in the early 1890s, as viewed from the pierhead. Bathing machines are lined up along the water's edge for this was a time when it was forbidden to enter the sea any other way. Machines were hired along with an attendant and a costume, the ladies segregated at some distance from the gentlemen.
