VE Day 1945

Our main exhibition in the Museum for 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the ending of the Second World War in Europe, and gives a taste of what life was like in the Ventnor area during that time.  VE Day on 8 May 1945 marked the end of the war in Europe, and was celebrated around Britain. The exhibition The 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two was created by Michael Freeman, and the video version here was produced by MrAlexTech.

The Globe Inn

The Globe Inn stood at 63-67  Ventnor High Street, on part of the site that is now the Central Car Park.  It dated from at least the 1840s, and there is mention of Chartists meeting in a large room at the hotel at about that time. Badly damaged in a 'hit and run' bombing raid in 1942,  it was demolished in 1943.
