Building the Eastern Esplanade.  By Michael Freeman. The main photo shows the building of the Eastern Esplanade in the late 1880s, complete with the temporary railway line to move the stone building blocks. The twin kiosks of the Royal Victoria Pier are visible as is the viaduct walkway that later became the Cascade Gardens. The second photo dates from 1890 and shows the new promenade at the same place.
