October History Society meeting: ‘Seeing and Visual Imagination in Victorian England’

28 October 2022: Ventnor & District Local History Society Monthly meeting. (7.30 – 9 pm)

The Speaker this month is John Elton, with a talk on Seeing and Visual Imagination in Victorian England.  His talk uses the work of authors and artists, some of whom visited or lived in Ventnor and the surrounding district, to examine how discoveries in science and improvements in technology in the Victorian era modified and sometimes transformed our way of looking at and imagining the world. It draws on examples from magazines, paintings, photography, film, poetry, novels and sociological writing.

The meeting will be in the Masonic Hall, Grove Road, as usual, 7.30-9 pm.

Admission is free to Society members, and members of the public are welcome (admission £2 at the door).
