Description
Ventnor in 99 Old Postcards (36 pages, 99 photographs). Postcards play an important part in social history, and cards featuring a particular location capture a moment in time, reflecting life as it was then – be it a simple seaside view, the local High Street, or an important event. The early part of the 20th century was the ‘Golden Age’ of postcards, and from then until 1980s thousands of Ventnor related cards were produced, and then posted to friends and relatives all over the country and the wider world.
This book uses a selection of cards from over the years to give a snapshot of life and times in and around the town in those years. Subjects covered include Aerial Views, The Beach, Carnival & Fete, The Cascade, The Children’s Corner/Boating Lake, Churches, Comic & Novelty Cards, The Esplanade, From the Cliffs & Pier, Hotels, Houses, Multiviews, The Park, The Pier, Pubs, The Royal National Hospital, Shops, Sports, St Boniface Down, St Catherine’s Home, The Station, Steephill Castle, Steephill Cove, Streets, Transport, Wheeler’s Bay and The Winter Gardens.
