Kathleen Riddick – Orchestral Conductor

Kathleen Riddick – Orchestral Conductor (1907-1973). Born in Surrey she came to live in Bonchurch with her grandparents in 1914, and played with Miss Petherwick’s Orchesta in Ventnor. Studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and in 1937 founded the London Women’s String Orchestra, the first women’s orchestra in Britain. One of the first women in Britain to establish herself in the male-dominated profession of conducting. By Lesley Telford, with thanks to Stephen Day for research.
