Amazing Women: Elizabeth Thompson and Olivia Parkes. The theme of Open Heritage Day in 2018 was Amazing Women, and this article describes Olivia Parkes, (also known as ‘Britannia’) who for many years defied convention to live in a wooden shack in Myrtle Bay, and Elizabeth Thompson (later known as Lady Butler) who was living in Ventnor in 1874 when her Crimean battle painting The Roll Call was exhibited at the Royal Academy and became a national sensation.
